Ok here is the question what the hell is Parkinson's Disease, well from what I know it is neurodegenerative disorder in such diseases neurons which are brain cells die sooner than normal both inside and outside the brain, although most damage occurs in the brain.
We are born with hundreds of billions of neurons and yes many die off naturally and most people have plenty of “spare” neurons. Now unlike most cells neurons don't reproduce to generate new nerve cells for when something goes wrong.
With a neurodegenerative condition certain types of neurons die at a much faster rate then normal wear and tear and are not replaced.
When too many neurons die a persons everyday motions such as walking, talking, swallowing and writing are effected. Our brains need something called dopamine to assist the neurons to function like fine tuning our brain actions. However, with Parkinson's this fine tuning action is lost when the dopamine neurons die.
So a persons movements become less smooth and more stiffer, slower and they appear to hesitate when trying to move or do stuff.
Do you have that?
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting on my post after such a long absence.
Yes I have Parkinson's and it was great to see a post from you after so long away
DeleteAs we age, most people can predict that physical (and perhaps mental) health will deteriorate somewhat. But people don't talk much about Parkinson's, except to be rude about the elderly. My handwriting now looks like utter rubbish so I should have myself tested. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteIt is a condition I knew nothing about till recently, I have it and now I have to learn how to cope with it, a year ago holding a pen and forming words was difficult now not so much
DeleteJo-Anne I must of missed the post that you had Parkinson’s. I’m sorry you have this. I think I heard that Parkinson’s is inherited. Do you know if that is true?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear you have Parkinsons. My brother in law has been living with it for 30 years now. Had both the brain surgeries, tons of medications, yet it has progressed. Good news is that he's in his 70s now and while it has slowed him a bit, it has not stopped him from being amazing. We stay up on a lot of the newer treatments and he's tried many. Cycling tends to slow the tremors and help with balance issues. Boxing helps with coordination. I wish you luck, its such a hard to nail down disease. ((( hugs)))
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear your brother in-law has this horrible condition I don't think I would like the brain surgery but who knows what the future holds.
DeleteWe are such complex creatures Jo-Anne.
ReplyDeleteThat we are
DeleteSuch an insidious disease, Jo-Anne. Prayers for you!
ReplyDeleteThat it is and thank you
DeleteThere are so many slow degenerative diseases that are heartbreaking, and Parkinson's is one of them. There are so many more treatments available now, and on the horizon, I hope that we will soon have a way to stave it off and/or a cure.
ReplyDeleteThat there is and maybe one day they will find a cure but don't expect it to be in my lifetime
DeleteI have a close friend with PD. I feel awful about it and it's hard watching her struggle.
ReplyDeleteIt is terrible and yes we struggle day after day but throwing in the towel isn't an option so we carry on the best we can
DeleteI have known several friends who have suffered badly from Parkinsons.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't a nice condition to have
DeleteI pray that they can keep it under control so it doesn't progress. At least that is what I understand is all that can be done. Like having glaucoma and many other diseases where they have no actual cure but can try to keep it from getting any worse, right? Your medications they've been trying seem like they have been helping you, though. What a thing to have happen. So sorry.
ReplyDeleteThat's right all we can do is try to slow the progress
DeleteThank you for sharing this. I am so sorry you are going through this. Are there medications that can help? I will keep you in my prayers. ((HUGS))
ReplyDeleteI am taking medication that does help and I take life one day at a time
