Cleaning Out

As most people may have noticed I have not been around as much this is because I have been busy cleaning out my parents house. I am done as the inside is done, well as much as can be, the rest will be done after my nephew is relocated.

I was in charge of sorting through photos and paperwork and was there a lot of photos hundreds of photos. I tossed all the scenery ones, all the ones of people we don't know and some that had multiple copies except one.

There were receipts dating back to the year 2000.

Also we found a shit load of wool and other knitting and crochet stuff, Mum didn't crochet that belonged to my great-aunty Joyce, Dad's aunt.

There is still under the house to be done but I would be useless when it comes to that.

We hired a 10 metre skip bin which was full in 2 days and was emptied and replaced. Of course that is expensive.

When I asked Mum why did she keep so much I heard her clearly say “because I couldn't be bothered”.

  1. I couldn't be bothered ended up being someone else's clean up. Happens when people get older, they can't be bothered or just plain can't do it.
It's a big job Jo-Anne, I had to do my parents house by myself with my husband.

  2. It's a huge task to clean out the family home and one I have done too. It's a very emotional time and puts pressure on family relationships too as often family members have different ideas of what and how things should be done. I hope you and your family get it done without too many hassles and once it is finished I hope you will feel the weight lifted off your shoulders. I am trying to unclutter at my house as I know how things can get too big a job and then it will be up to family to sort through and my children will possibly not have the time to go through everything. Hope you get through it and get some time to rest up.

  3. It's a tough job, emotionally and often physically, to clean out one's parents' home. I know so many people who had a parent who kept everything, and it can such a burden for the family after they pass. My step-dad never got rid of any paper, he had every pay receipt, etc. since he had started working at 15 years of age!

I don't have siblings or children, so some years ago I started cleaning stuff out, donating what I didn't need or want anymore. It's always in the back of my mind that a stranger will go through my things when I die, and toss them or donate them, so that's a large part of the reason I don't hold on to most things anymore.

Good luck with the rest of it.

  4. Too often people wait so long to clear things out and purge that they physically can't deal with it anymore. Then someone else has to do it after they're gone. Happens so often. Hard to be going through everything. You must be exhausted!

  6. As you know, I've done my fair share of cleaning up after a loved one's passing. It's not easy. It's physical and quite emotional as well. But when it is done, there is a feeling of relief.

  9. Such a task is difficult, even when it's done by more than one person. I try not to keep too much stuff as I get older.

    Love,
