Poem Day

Leisure

By  More W. H. Davies

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare

No time to stand beneath the boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and cows

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare

  1. If you're on lockdown, there's time but hopefully, all of us will appreciate the freedom and time when we get it back.

  2. Dearest Jo-Anne,
Yes, we should make more time for standing still, for holding on to the moment and for really absorbing the little miracles around us. Not chasing the big things that remain forever out of reach...
    Hugs,

  3. Lovely. I think COVID has forced many who wouldn't otherwise "stand still" to do just that and to appreciate the "small" things in life, appreciate a less hectic pace.

  4. So true. No matter how busy, we must make time to appreciate the things and people around us.

  5. Dear Jo-Anne, thanks so much for sharing this poem with us. I'd forgotten it, and I know I met it many years ago. Unfortunately, I used to stop and stare often and ever. Friends thought of me as a dreamer. But as the cares of making a living took up more of my time, I gradually "put my nose to the grindstone" and forgot "to stand and stare." That is, for me, a way to pray. In fact, it is prayer. So today, I will hold a cat on my lap and simply gaze out the window. I'll think of you with gratitude. Peace.

  6. So funny, in normal circumstances I'd agree with the author, but I'm guessing the author had no idea Covid would be coming.
