Meals.............and cooking

Do you cook more or less as you get older, do you find yourself wondering why you bother cooking a meal when no ones wants to eat it when it is done?

What is the best meal you have ever cooked, do you have a favourite dish to make?

Is that dish something you love to eat or is it something you make because the kids or the other half love it.

Now that it is just me and Tim here I do not cook very often at all, I do have times when I will invite the girls over and I will make a Sunday lunch but daily I don't cook very often why because I am fed up with making a meal and having Tim say he isn't hungry. So I will make something for myself and let Tim make his own tea when he is ready for it.

We do eat a lot of frozen meals and will often have chips with our meat instead of vegies. Growing up we always had meat and vegies when dad was home but when dad was at work we would often just have eggs or toasted sandwiches for tea.

I remember a few years ago thinking it was stranger that my parents didn't have proper meals any more but now I get it.

  1. It sounds as if you have as unhealthy eating habits as I do. I couldn't exist without TV dinners and paper plates. ;-)

  2. I do love to cook, although I am usually strapped for time. A nice thing is that my husband loves to grill and bar-b-que meat and vegetables, so that helps. And yes, I can see how it will probably be changing where we cook less and less.

  3. i am not much of a cook. The other half does the cooking and I clean up and do the gardening. Spaghetti Bolognese is one of my favourites. He usually cooks enough for four meals and we freeze half for another night when he doesn't feel like cooking.

  5. I cook way more now than I did a few years ago. That's because I'm home now, of course due to my illness. My favorite is a recipe from my mom and it'll be featured on a fellow blogger's site soon =P

  7. I've made a three-ring binder of my son's favorite meals, right down to the stains and little comments. He gave me a funny look when I gave it to him, but someday he'll be very glad to have it. I'd give anything to have some of my grandmother's recipes, none of which were written down...

I don't know if I have a best meal. I do love quinoa. And chicken. If it's got those two, it's a winner. I usually just whatever sound good together.

  12. I don't cook as much as I did when the kids were still home. We eat healthier now part because we need less food at our age and we aren't raising growing children.

I am a good cook but usually our suppers are things like chicken and veggies. I don't have one favorite dish. I love to cook for the holidays where there are pies and cakes involved. I don't make those except for special occasions any more.

  13. I'm just an ordinary cook Jo-Anne, but I cook for both of us just about every day...we have steak and various other meats cooked, vegies, salads, often meat is cooked on the barby in summer, we have baked dinners too but not every week - I make dishes, sometimes I cook my own dinner if my husband doesn't wish to eat what I am eating, so he will cook his own.
I would never contemplate buying frozen dinners. I try new foods and have no favourite food. I also cook food for my dad. We have family and friends come to both houses (ours and dads) and I soon whip up a meal for guests at each house. We seem to have lots of people coming for meals at times. I am not that fond of cooking :) We don't eat sweets as we both don't care for them so therefore I don't make them.
Once in while we have take a ways...we also go out to dinner with friends or family... dinner is night time for me, I have always called it that....lunch is lunch time and so on. We don't have morning or afternoon tea or supper which is before we go to bed, but of course will have a drink of water or diet lemonade or a cup of tea as neither of us drink coffee. Meal time is not a regimental time either. Lunch is from say 12.30pm to 3pm, dinner from about 6.30pm to 8 or 9pm, depends on what we are doing or where we have been or are going...
Gee, that seems to be a long winded reply...lol :)

    1. Yeah for me lunch is around the middle of the day and tea is late in the afternoon I do not eat a meal after dark, that goes back to my youth........I don't drink tea or coffee but during the colder months I love a hot chocolate before going to bed.

  14. Dearest Jo-Anne,
Wow, I am surprised after reading those comments about eating habits. Guess I'm different as we want to eat healthy and that means you have to cook it yourself! No frozen meals and no snacks and junk food. Lots of veggies and fruit and mainly we both eat vegetarian with also fish and some chicken. Rarely pork or beef. Love to make soups that serve as a meal. We seldom go a restaurant, budget wise and also mainly for health reason. If we dine out it is at our Italian friend's Ristorante da Maria. She cooks fresh and with good and healthy ingredients.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my Mom's 89th birthday. Yes, you say Mum, the British way. It is tough to live 7,000 kilometers away but we do stay in touch via Skype. You are lucky for having your Mother still around. Know how blessed you are!
    Hugs to you,
    Mariette

  15. It has been my husband and I on our own for so long that I am used to cooking for two. My husband and I are avid foodies so we always try new things at home. We love working in the kitchen together. I would be sad when it came to a time when we didn't :-)

  18. For me there's a total difference between 'making dinner' and 'cooking'. I love to create when I cook. So I try new recipes a lot. Then change them up. But in a pinch or when time is short, I just make dinner from old favorites.
