Speak ill of the Dead

We have all head the saying "I won't speak ill of the dead" and I get it, really I do when someone passes it isn't nice to say bad things about them it just isn't the done thing.

However, how long does that last?

It gets me when I hear some people saying this person or that person was such a great person and they are missed when the truth is they were not nice, they were not a great parent. They treated their children like crap, rarely praising their child if ever, they were not one for hugs and kisses and such.  All in all they sucked.................

Now they are dead and have been dead for many years, you speak about them as if they were a great, wonderful, loving person. I don't get it why do you do that have you forgotten what a rotten person they really were.

Yes there have been members of my family who are now remembered fondly, but really were not the nicest person around.

Do you ever wonder what people will say about you when you have died. Sometimes I do, but not very often I do think it would be cool to be able to watch my own funeral......................lol

  1. It does seem that people really move up in the public's opinion after they die. I have wondered what people would say about me after I'm gone, just like you~

    1. Yeah it would be nice to know maybe, if they say not so nice things maybe it would not be so nice to hear.

    1. It would be great if they are partying to remember a great person not so much if they are just glad she is gone...........

  3. You are dead right on that one Jo-Anne....have no idea why people say nice things when they were not so good in life. Then we have lots of people who have been in jail and some of them come out as the greatest of people! Weird!

  4. I do occasionally wonder how I will be remembered. I hope that I am not acting badly enough in life that people would want to talk ill of me now or then. But you are right, how death changes how people are remembered. They could of been awful in life but in death people tend not to say anything negative.

    1. I am pleased to hear that I am not the only one who thinks it is strange that people remember some really rotten people fondly after they have died

  5. I'm with you - I've seen people put their dead loved ones on pedistals after they've gone. Just recently, here in our local newspaper a drugged out man, who stole a car and crashed it into a house - ran from the police, shot at them and when they got him, he apparently died of a heart attack. Well his mother is on TV saying that the police killed him and he was such a sweet dear man - blah blah blah. You see this all the time. Denial.

As for how I will be remembered, at this time in my life, I don't really care.

    1. Yes it annoys me when I see on telly the family of someone who fled police, was violent towards them and ended up dying saying what a great person they where

  6. I hate it when someone is terminally ill or has died and people turn him into a saint when he was quite the bastard.

  10. Our father, a bad, bad man, died in 2011 of diabetes brought on by being "morbidly obese" (this was NOT why he was bad). He left instructions in his will that he was to be cremated and his ashes spread in Long Island Sound.
We didn't speak ill of him, but my brothers and I urinated in Long Island Sound.
I hope Hell has Visiting Hours.

  11. Wait wait... Does this rule apply to people who were assholes when they were alive?! It can't. Because then we wouldn't even be able to talk smack about hitler... And he was a douchenozzle!!

    Hugs!

  12. Oh I so understand this. There is a person in my past who passed away and while he was unbearable and truly cruel in life I am careful to say about that while he is dead. I know there are people who thought differently about him. I will keep my true opinions to myself. :-)

    1. It is hard when you see the rotten side of a person but others don't as then you have to be careful what you say about them

  13. I believe that you should not put the dead on a pedestal when they fell off when they were alive. Truth is truth and that is always the best policy. :-)

  14. I think it's pretty common to forget the bad things people do when they die....at least for some people.....I have a long memory. My husband's brother killed himself after a lifetime of putting his parents and his kids through awful times and his parents tend to remember the good times.
